Coyotes baseball open conference with home win

The Cerro Coso baseball team hosted Barstow in the first of a three-game series and the first game in Inland Empire Athletic Conference action. At the end of nine innings, the Coyotes defeated the Vikings 11-1, to improve to 8-9 overall and start conference with a perfect 1-0 record. The Coyotes travel to Barstow on Thursday and return home for the final game on Saturday with the first pitch at 2 p.m.

The Coyotes offense had 34 at bats with 11 hits for 11 runs and 11 RBIs. They were walked 11 times with nine strikeouts and left 15 players stranded on base. Second baseman Gavin Fraser and designated hitter Brooks Scott both led the team with three RBIs. Right fielder Jonluke Hobdy led the team with three hits on five at bats. Cerro Coso scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead, but gave up a run in the top of the fourth. Leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, the home team added three more runs and then scored four in the seventh, and a final run in the eighth.

Cerro Coso used five pitchers giving the bullpen nine hits for an earned run with four walks and six strikeouts. Starting on the mound and getting the win was Kanon Welbourne who went six innings giving up seven hits for an earned run with three walks and three strikeouts. Trenton Doty threw an inning with a walk. Romeo Rodriguez threw an inning with two strikeouts. Johnathan Neal threw 0.2 innings giving up a hit, and Nicholas Fuller threw 0.1 innings with a hit and a walk.
