The Cerro Coso Women's basketball team defeated LA Valley College on Saturday night to move on to the Sweet 16 in the 3C2A state championship. They will face the #1 SoCal ranked Orange Coast College on the road on Saturday March 8th. They defeated LAVC by 11 points with help of a scoring burst in the second and third quarters. Game script allowed LAVC to outscore them in the fourth, but thanks to a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter that did not matter.
The Coyotes were led by IEAC player of the year Shaniyah McCarthy who put up another double-double, scoring 22 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She also showed strength and stamina by playing in 39 minutes of this game. Other notable players of Saturday's contest were Lia Sims and Alexis Staton with Sims scoring 16 points and Staton scoring 12.
This win comes as Cerro Coso's first playoff win in program history, adding on to Coach Johnson's historical first season on campus. They will hope to continue this momentum into Saturday's contest to take down another strong program in OCC. We hope to see you on the road on Saturday night at 7 PM at Orange Coast College!
