The Cerro Coso Baseball team capped off their 2021 season, finishing with a 14-14 record. In a shortened season due to COVID-19 modifications, the Coyotes made the most out of the 28 game schedule, with a large majority of their games played being on the road. The Coyote players demonstrated a tremendous amount of grit to pull off this season and did so in respectable fashion. Cerro Coso was in essence, adopted into the Central Valley Conference this season, filling a void left by Porterville College and West Hills College, both teams that opted out of the spring season. This allowed the Coyotes to build a strong schedule against some of the best baseball in the state.

The modified 2021 season allowed for players to compete in the CCCAA without using a season of eligibility, which allowed Coach Scott to move some players around the lineup and give some guys extra playing time that they may not get in a traditional season. It served as an opportunity to develop some players and build experience leading into the 2022 season. And in an "extended tryout" scenario, the Coyotes gave Coach Scott a lot to think about in the off season. The Cerro Coso offense finished top 5 in the state in all major offensive categories, with the exception of triples.

  • At Bats- 973, 5th in the state

  • Hits- 318, 3rd in the state
  • Doubles- 68, 4th in the state
  • Home Runs- 31, 1st in the state

Individually, the Coyotes were represented at the state level by offensive performances by Michael Doerr and Luis Reyes. Doerr lead the Coyotes with a .433 average (8th in the state) and had 39 hits (11th in the state), 31 RBI (8th in the state) and scoring 33 times (6th in the state). Reyes represented the Coyotes with 37 runs scored (4th in the state), 6 home runs (6th in the state).

On the mound, the Coyotes were plagued by injury and were never able to get into a rhythm this season. However there were some bright spots for Cerro Coso's pitching staff giving a sense of optimism for next spring. Clayton Detherage stepped into a huge starting role this season with a 2-3 record and 30 strike outs. Most notably earning big wins over Reedley College and Merced College. Carlos Soto also stepped in to many difficult situations this spring as a starter, reliever, and closer answering the call when needed. And Jax Holzem developed into a strong presence on the mound filling both starting and closing roles when needed.

In what has proven to be a long year for Coso, dating back to early September, the Coyotes will enjoy some time off this summer before they regroup and turn around to do it all again this fall.
