The 2019-2020 Cerro Coso Basketball season brings an addition to the coaching staff with the hiring of assistant men's basketball coach, Tyrone Shelley. The Coyote Athletic Department and Men's Basketball team are excited about the energy and level of basketball knowledge that Coach Shelley will bring to the program. His past experience both as a coach and as a high level student ahtlete will serve his Coyote athletes well as he is able to relate to players through his credibilty on the court.

Coach Shelley is a native of San Diego, CA, where he previously served as Varsity Head Coach for San Pasqual Academy. Prior to that Shelley lead the O’Farrell High School basketball team.

Although he has a passion for coaching, Shelley is no stranger to being on the court. He graduated from Crawford High School. He was named the Student Sports All-American All- Junior honoree. In that same year, the high school standout scored a record 76 points in a single game. As a senior, Shelley completed his high school career by setting the CIF San Diego Section career scoring record with 2,962 points.

As a college freshman, Shelley attend Pepperdine University where he averaged a team high of 15 points per game and ranked fourth in the West Coast Conference. After one year in Malibu, the shooting guard transferred to San Diego State University. As a junior, he helped the Aztecs take home the Mountain West Conference Championship and a NCAA tournament berth. Shelley and the Aztecs parted ways after his junior year. He attended Georgetown College, a NAIA Division school in Kentucky.

In 2014, Shelley decided to take his talents to the professional level where he played in the American Basketball Association (ABA). Shelley served as a player and Interim Head Coach of the San Diego Surf Basketball Team. In his spare time, he’s played in a number of amateur leagues around the country.

Shelley has always demonstrated a love for the game of basketball. It is his goal to channel this passion in the development of young men and support their personal and athletic growth through the game he loves. Tyrone Shelley holds a bachelors degree in Business Administration.
