There is a lot of buzz surrounding this season's Coyote Men's Basketball Team, as they enter the 2020 new year holding on to an 11-1 record and the #21 ranking in the CCCAA. This team has brought tremendous energy to court every night, and their early success is a product of hard work in the off season, and a commitment to player development by Head Coach Chris Dugan, and the addition of Assistant Coach Tyrone Shelley. As Coach Dugan was preparing for his second season at the helm, his priority of taking his program to the next step was to find an assistant coach that could make an immediate impact. Enter, Tyrone Shelley.

Coach Shelley is no stranger to success on the court. The San Diego native has been revered as one of the best Southern California high school basketball players in recent years. When Shelley left Crawford High School, he was San Diego's all time leading scorer with 2,962 including a record 76 point game. He finished as the eighth best player in the state according to rivals.com behind NBA players James Harden and Austin Daye. The prospect would then go on to play at the collegiate level for Pepperdine, SDSU, and Georgetown College (Kentucky).

As a Coyote, Tyrone Shelley is using his past experiences in a new chapter to his life by trading in his court shoes for dress shoes as the Cerro Coso assistant coach. Coach Dugan is most pleased with his ability to relate to the players as a coach and brings credibility to his instruction through his own success, "the guys really respond well to Tyrone, and when they pull up his old film they are quick to realize, coach was a beast". His work with the team is best recognized in one on one skill development that has allowed the team to be more aggresive at the rim. Coach Shelley also notes that he has learned a lot about the junior college system and has benefited from the knowledge and leadership that Coach Dugan has demonstrated and hopes to continue his own development as a coach.
